Haseltonia columna-trajani

Haseltonia

Large columnar cactus (to 30 foot) from Puebla, Mexico.
Generally remains solitary and forms a lateral cephalium. There is
only one species, Haseltonia columna-trajani (Karwinsky ex Pfeiffer) Backeberg
(= Cephalocereus hoppenstedtii (F.A.C.Weber) K.Schumann).
Probably most closely related to Cephalocereus senilis. It is regretably very
rare in cultivation and seems to grow very slowly.

The plant illustrated is in the collection of Suzanne and Tony Mace
and is probably over 20 years old and about one foot in height.
