The first flower on our 3m specimen of Espostoa guentheri was produced in October 2003. The cephalium growth started approximately one year earlier. Interestingly the flower stayed open for two nights probably because of the cool weather. This is a specimen acquired at a size of about 1.7m just over ten years ago from a collector who retired to France and is in a 25cm pot Our own specimen planted in a free root run bed which I thought would flower first rotted at the base a couple of years ago and we now have a number of nicely rooted specimens from it. The later have better, more colourful and longer spination than the specimen illustrated. The small cephalium is however already showing some of the intense colouration for which the species is well known. | ![]() Copyright Tony Mace, no reproduction without permission of the author. |
